Benefits
Turmeric has been used in some cultures for thousands of years, and science is just starting to figure out how it works. But sometimes we don't need the science to tell us that something works; we’ve figured it out already.
The magic is in the curcumin which gives turmeric its yellow or orange colour. As a home remedy, it’s used for acne eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, wrinkles and dark circles under your eyes.
It’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, slowing down cell damage.
Chamomile has many benefits; it's soothing to your body as it relieves mild pain, fights skin irritations and helps to ease anxiety.
We've infused the olive oil in this soap with chamomile. The two of them together make an excellent "warrior" combination - fighting free radicals that cause skin damage, reducing inflammation, pain and swelling, giving you healthier skin.
Lemongrass Essential oil is used in aromatherapy to relieve muscle pain. It soothes irritated skin; it serves as a natural toner, strengthens your skin tissues and can sterilize your pores.
It’s antifungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, it's also calming and can help to relieve anxiety and irritability.
Orange Essential oil is another oil, that while being cheerful and uplifting, is also calming and relaxing. It stimulates the strength and resilience of your immune system and can eliminate airborne bacteria.
Avocado oil is not only good for the inside of you, but also on the outside of you, and like so many other ingredients in our By the Sea Soap Shoppe soaps, avocado oil is also a great moisturizer for your skin, and is quickly absorbed.
It's anti-inflammatory, helping conditions such as acne and may help you with wrinkles as it helps your skin to maintain its elasticity. It's anti-oxidant, helping to protect your skin from skin damage due to free radicals. Avocado oil is rich in Vitamin E, beta-carotene, Vitamin D, protein, lecithin and fatty acids; this combination makes it a natural after-sun product, helping to sooth your skin if you have a sunburn.
Avocado oil makes a good makeup remover, and if you leave some of the oil on your skin – all the better! Use it on fine lines, wrinkles, cracked heels and dry cuticles, or anywhere you want to use it.
Note: If you are allergic to latex, you are likely also allergic to fruits that contain the same allergens as latex such as avocado, banana, kiwi and passionfruit. This would also mean that, sadly, you should probably pass on this soap for yourself.
Shea butter, (which is also in some of our other soaps) is included in this soap. It helps your skin while it moisturizes with its Vitamins A and E and fatty acids, making it anti-inflammatory and antioxidant (fighting those nasty "free radicals" (more information in Benefits).
Coconut oil is easily absorbed into the outside layer of your skin (called the epidermis). It helps to protect from infection, repairs your skin barrier and helps to regulate how much water you lose through your skin.
Olive oil has lots of Vitamins A, D, E and K. Each vitamin has a positive effect on your skin, but Vitamin E is especially great as it is an "antioxidant", which helps to prevent skin damage and may prevent premature aging and sun damage.
Size
Because the bars are handmade, you can expect to see slight differences in the size and weight. After the soap is made, it needs to cure for at least one month. However, after it's cured, some of the moisture in the bar continues to evaporate out. The bar shrinks a little; enough that the label we've wrapped around the bar becomes a bit loose and the weight decreases a little. The bar gets harder, and this is actually better. There is nothing lost from the soap, and it will not dissolve as quickly when it does get wet in a shower or bath.
Each bar is approximately 2 1/2 in. x 2 1/2 in. x 1 in. - or 6 cm. x 6 cm. x 2 cm. Weight is between 3.5 and 4 oz., or between 99 and 113 grams.
Please note that because this soap is handmade, the appearance of the soap may not be exactly as pictured.
Lye
Some of you might be wondering, "Lye? Isn’t lye dangerous? Won’t it harm my skin?”
First - all actual soap is made with lye. No lye, no soap. (A lot of "soap products" in the stores are actually detergent. If you look at the labels, they are not called "soap". They are called "hand wash" or "body cleanser" or some such thing.)
This could become a chemistry lesson, but to make it short - soap is made from lye, fats and liquid. When the lye mixes with the fats and liquid, some kind of chemical reaction goes on, and the lye and fats change into soap and glycerin. In the process, the lye is all used up. Even though lye is used to make the soap, there is no lye left in the soap at all.
This is why soap made with lye is not dangerous, and it definitely won’t hurt your skin.
